A Bit of History:
The Murano Italian Art Glass Sculpture, a "Seagull on Wave" signed "B.R. 83," was made by the artist Boscolo Roberto (B.R.) in 1983 (83). It was likely a commissioned piece for the Franklin Mint and created using traditional, hand-blown Murano glass techniques.
Glassmaking in the Venetian lagoon dates back to at least the 10th century, with early artisans producing utilitarian items like bottles and tableware.
In 1291, the Venetian government forced all glassmakers to move their workshops to the island of Murano. This was done to protect the city from the frequent fires caused by the intense heat of the furnaces & to consolidate control over their valuable trade secrets.
