Country and Ruler: Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, issued during the reign of Grand Duchess Charlotte (1919-1964).
Denomination and Period: 1 Franc (1 LUF), part of a series circulated between 1952 and 1964.
Composition and Design: Made of copper-nickel, with a reeded edge and coin alignment (meaning the reverse is inverted when flipped horizontally). The specific "worker" design on the 1953 coin (KM#46.3) features the shovel handle close to the 'L' of "LETZEBURG".
Historical Significance: This coin marked the last time the "puddler" (field worker/foundry worker) was used as a motif on a Luxembourg coin. The model for this iconic worker figure was Mathias Gaasch, a real-life worker at a Dudelange foundry, whose image was captured in a painting by Auguste Tremont and later engraved for the coin.
